When Gavrilo Princip fired two history-changing bullets that ended the life of the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Ferdinand, in June of 1914, the First World War became all but inevitable. Other factors, such as the waning power of imperialism, rising nationalism, and the power vacuum created in the wake of the fall of the Ottoman Empire, contributed to global volatility in this period. Before the outbreak of fighting in Europe, a changing balance of power, the vestiges of colonialism, and shaky diplomacy between neighbors created an environment conducive to battle.
